US Adventure – People Exploration – Day 16 – John – Retired Shipyard Worker of Hawaii

It’s a great feeling to be on a mission to ‘meet people, make friends and see if there’s a way to help make a difference in people’s lives.’ I saw a sign at the side of the road advertising — “Lychee”. I wondered what it was.John and Stan2

So I stopped along the route of Highway 83 on the windward side of Oahu Hawaii. That’s where I met John who was selling lychee along the road. I think it was called Kamehameha.

Anyway, he Lives up the hill about two miles away. His wife was sound asleep in the BMW they were driving. She was supposed to be bagging more lychee to sell. They were selling the fruit for donations to a foundation affiliated with the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

lycheeI learned that lychee is sweet and crispy fruit that many people enjoy eating it fresh. It is protected by a bumpy, leathery rind that is inedible, but for me this rind easily came away from the juicy flesh of the fruit, which is translucent and a pearly white color.

John’s retired, after working for 33 years in the shipyard industry as a metal worker and then another 12 years in education. About his retirement – he likes free time and traveling.

About Hawaii – he likes the people, the climate, the rain, and the patient people who are waiting on the side.

John said he wouldn’t want to be a ruler or dictator or to make anyone or anybody do anything for any days.

US Adventure – People Exploration – Day 16 – Brodi – Uber Driver Entrepreneur in Honolulu, Hawaii

Since I’ve been an independent business owner and entrepreneur most of my life, I was interested in talking to the driver when I brought up the app to request a ride around the island.

I liked Brodi right away when he was completely receptive to answering my questions.Stan and Brodi2

He said he’s been an Uber driver for about 7-8 months. With a slight chuckle, he told me he’s lived in Hawaii in the central part of the island not far from Pearl Harbor all his life. He has traveled elsewhere including flying over the State of Arizona.

What he likes most about being an Uber driver – “To just go to talk with people.”

He likes to set his own hours and be his own boss. There’s nobody watching over him when he works and he works when he wants to work. He takes a break when he wants to take a break. It’s fun meeting a lot of interesting people from all over the world. Some of them have intriguing stories or tales to share.

But sometimes being an Uber driver can be a pain in the butt – dealing with the traffic in Honolulu can be stressful.

About this area, he likes the weather but he’s not really fond of the ocean because he’s not an ocean person even though he lives on an island. Make sense, right?

He stays because he likes the people. It’s the melting pot and they’re nice people. If you mind your own business … so no one’s going to hassle you or trouble you or bother you. People come from all over the world and usually they’re in a good mood because they’re on vacation or most times they are in a good mood so they’re friendly and they’re happy and they’re easy to get along with.

Brodi said he wanted to think about ‘what he wants more of it in life’ because he wants his answer to be really important to him. For the his answer to have meaning to himself.

“I’d like to have stronger faith in the Lord – that’s my answer.”

About being a dictator or ruler of the world for a day?

He says he would not want to be in that position as a dictator. “No thank you!” He would not care for being a dictator – he’d rather just let everybody kind of make decisions on their own.

US Adventure – People Exploration – Day 16 – Charin – Retired Credit Union Branch Manager in Honolulu, Hawaii

What a great feeling it is to be on my people travel adventures in Hawaii! Of course, I must keep my focus on my mission of – “Meet people, make friends and see if I can help make a difference in their lives.”

I was at the Honolulu airport and looking for a ride to my hotel of Aqua Ohia Waikiki. Stan and Sally - Waikiki BeachWhile considering whether I should use a shuttle service, a taxi or a private entrepreneur Uber driver, I happened to notice a woman who seemed friendly. That’s when I met Charin who agreed to be my tour guide while I was in the area. She was so very sweet when she took the time to get me a lai and put it around my neck. That’s also when I noticed that she wore a a very cute muumuu.

Anyway, after I got checked into my hotel room, the first place we went to was … the beach at Waikiki.

Charin’s been I Hawaii for 50 years, even though she assured she’s only 38. Her favorite part about Hawaii is all the friendly people. It’s a complete melting pot hot-spot and she claims that everyone knows Hawaiians are known for their hospitality. Personally, I think people are incredibly friendly wherever I’ve gone.

Who do you think about how people are – where you are?

One thing she doesn’t like about the Hawaiian area is the congested traffic and the rail that they’re building and working on is blocking all traffic. Yes, and living in Hawaii – it’s very expensive.

About work? Charin’s retired and says that doing nothing is not too very exciting. But when she was working, she didn’t like that she had to get up early in the morning and had to move her butt.

If she were ruler for a day – she would declare that everyone would work only Saturday and Sunday, but have the rest of the week of Monday through Friday off.

Don’t you think we should get it going that Charin becomes ‘Ruler for a Day?’

US Adventure – People Exploration – Day 14 – Gilbert – Mobile Phone Expert in Mesa AZ

I’ve forgotten which ‘day’ it is on my people travel adventures where my mission is … “Meet people, make friends and see if I can help make a difference in their lives.”

I’m in Mesa, Arizona today and I think it is Day 14. I wanted to have my mobile phone checked so I decided to drop into a local store of a franchise – Wireless Toyz.

Gilbert and Stam 4-24That’s when I was helped out by Gilbert who has worked at Wireless Toyz off and on 10 years.

When asked – What do you like best at your job – Gilbert said it was the customer service that he provides.

When asked– What do you like least about your job – that brought – sometimes the customers. It usually happens when customers come in angry about situations that weren’t caused by him or his company.

Gilbert has lived in the area 10 years and said that what he liked best about this area was the … quiet. Everything and anything quiet.

“Everything’s great” … that everything was just right for him.

If he were the world’s ruler for a day, he would declare that everyone would take the day off, of course, with pay. He added that he would institute that every Sunday would be a no work day. And on the day off, he would spend it with his family.

If he said if he were given an opportunity that would give him more of that family time (even if he wasn’t ruler of the world for a day) he stated that definitely he would be open to looking at it.

US Adventure – People Exploration – Day 10 – Sarah – Nail Specialist in Mesa AZ

Hi everyone – I’m in Arizona for a couple of days and it’s the day before I leave for Hawaii. I wanted some personal pampering so I decided to find a nail spa and get a pedicure. I knew of a spot that had been recommended to me.

I walked in and that’s where I met Sarah. Immediately, I could feel a fresh kindness flowing from her.Stan and Sarah

About the area – she felt that It’s inexpensive – yes, kind of an inexpensive area to live in. And a lot of her friends live near her in the area, which means fun and parties.

But then with a sigh, she added that the worst thing is probably cuz there’s not a lot to do.

Sarah said she was born in Hawaii. Her dad retired from the Navy and her mother’s family lives in the area so they came here.

Sarah’s been working at the nail spa for two years. Meeting new people is one of the best parts of her job.

One of the worst things is that she has to lose sleep. Especially worse is on Mondays when she has to drag herself to the job. Also, There a lot of long days inside. Plus, she’s away from her kid, her son who is just three.

What she would like more of in her life … would be – to do some traveling, with more time to relax and play with her son. Of course, she would like to try new things. With bright open flair, Sarah stated she would like to enjoy life more than what she is now.

She says she’s ambitious and to get more out of life, she said she would be open to look at a venture. It would be great if she could be shown something which would provide her that chance – achieve some of the things she’d like to do. She liked it when I mentioned that I’d have George Pauli get in touch with her.

If she ruled the world for a day – she wished that everyone would be nice to each other. To take a day to do good things to each other and and help each other out.
